Digital assets are not one asset class
The first mistake in digital finance is to treat all digital assets as though they belong in a single bucket. They do not. A payment token, a tokenised money-market fund, a governance token, a non-fungible token and a token representing a claim on real-world collateral can behave in radically different ways. They carry different sources of value, different legal risks and different technological dependencies. Lumping them together obscures the central task of analysis: to identify the underlying claim.
That matters because the language of the sector can be misleading. A token may be marketed as a currency, a utility, a community asset or a store of value. Yet from an investor’s perspective, what matters is more prosaic: who controls issuance, whether redemption exists, what rights attach to ownership, whether cash flows are generated, how governance works in practice and what happens when something breaks. In conventional finance, analysts distinguish between equity, debt, commodities and fund units because each implies a distinct analytical method. Digital assets deserve the same discipline.

A useful starting point is to divide the market into broad functional categories: native network assets used to pay for computation or settlement; stable-value instruments designed to track fiat money; tokenised claims on off-chain assets; and speculative tokens whose value depends largely on expected future demand. This does not solve every problem, but it prevents category errors. An asset that depends on reserves held by a custodian should not be analysed as though it were a decentralised monetary good. Nor should a token with no enforceable claim be valued as though it were a share.
Begin with the source of value
Every financial asset ultimately rests on some source of value. In equities, it is a claim on the future earnings of a firm. In sovereign bonds, it is the taxing power of the state. In gold, it is scarcity, industrial use and social convention. In digital assets, the answer is often less clear, which is why investors should insist on a simple question: what sustains demand if market sentiment turns?
Some digital assets derive utility from network use. If a token is required to pay transaction fees or secure a network, demand may be linked to actual activity. But this relationship is rarely neat. Network usage can rise while token prices fall if issuance is high, if fees are low or if users interact through intermediaries that shield them from direct token demand. Others rely on redemption mechanisms, reserve assets or arbitrage relationships. In such cases, the quality of reserves, the legal segregation of assets and the credibility of redemption are more important than social-media enthusiasm.
Then there are assets whose value depends almost entirely on narrative and liquidity. That does not make them irrelevant; markets frequently assign high values to future optionality. But it does require intellectual honesty. If there is no claim on cash flow, no robust redemption right and no demonstrated utility, the investment case rests mainly on resale demand. Such assets can still rally strongly, but they should be assessed as speculative instruments, not confused with productive ones.
One practical method is to write the investment thesis in one sentence without using the words “adoption”, “ecosystem” or “community”. If the argument still stands, it may be substantive. If it collapses into circular logic, caution is warranted.
Separate technology risk from financial risk
Digital assets blend software systems with financial incentives. Investors therefore face two overlapping forms of uncertainty. The first is technological: bugs in code, weaknesses in cryptographic design, governance failures in protocol upgrades and vulnerability to congestion or outages. The second is financial: leverage, maturity mismatch, poor collateral quality, concentration of counterparties and opaque balance sheets. The history of the sector suggests that the second set of risks often matters more than enthusiasts admit.
A network may function exactly as designed while investors still suffer losses because the surrounding financial structure is unsound. Custodians can fail. Exchanges can commingle assets. Stable-value arrangements can prove fragile under stress. Lending structures can depend on collateral that evaporates when volatility spikes. The lesson is not that the technology is unimportant, but that software reliability does not eliminate old-fashioned financial fragility.
This is why due diligence should proceed on two tracks. First, examine the architecture: how the ledger reaches consensus, who can alter the code, whether external audits have been published and how the system has behaved under strain. Second, examine the market plumbing: where assets are held, whether client property is segregated, how liquidity is sourced, how collateral is marked and what rights users possess in insolvency. Much of the severe damage in digital markets has resulted not from elegant theoretical flaws but from very ordinary failures of governance and control.
Custody is a core investment question
In traditional finance, investors often outsource custody and focus on market risk. In digital assets, custody is inseparable from investment risk because control of the cryptographic keys often determines control of the asset. Lose the keys and the asset may be unrecoverable. Entrust them to an intermediary and the relevant risk becomes the resilience, honesty and legal structure of that intermediary.
There is no universally superior custody model. Self-custody reduces dependence on third parties but increases operational burden and the possibility of irreversible human error. Third-party custody can improve workflow and oversight, particularly for institutions, but introduces counterparty and legal risk. The crucial point is that custody choices should be made deliberately, not by convenience.

Investors should ask basic questions. Who controls the private keys? Are transactions subject to multi-signature approval? Is there geographic and organisational separation of key shards or backups? What insurance, if any, exists, and what exactly does it cover? In the event of insolvency, are client assets ring-fenced or could they be treated as part of the estate? Regulators in several jurisdictions have repeatedly warned that legal treatment in bankruptcy may differ from customer expectations, especially where terms of service are vague or broad.
For institutions, governance around custody may matter as much as the cryptography itself. Segregation of duties, transaction limits, recovery procedures and independent reconciliation are the digital equivalent of basic treasury controls. Sophisticated technology does not excuse weak process.

Stable-value instruments deserve forensic scrutiny
Assets designed to maintain a stable value sit near the heart of digital finance because they serve as settlement instruments, collateral and a bridge to conventional money. Their apparent simplicity is precisely why they require careful analysis. A token aiming to stay worth one unit of fiat currency is only as robust as the mechanism supporting that promise.
The first issue is reserve quality. Short-dated government securities and cash at regulated banks are not the same as unsecured corporate paper, affiliated loans or opaque “other assets”. The second issue is redemption. Can eligible holders redeem promptly at par, or is the process restricted, delayed or discretionary? The third is legal structure. Are reserve assets held for the benefit of token holders, or do holders merely have a contractual claim against an issuer? The fourth is transparency: are attestations regular, independent and sufficiently detailed to identify concentration and maturity risk?
The official sector has paid unusual attention to these questions. International standard-setters and central banks have noted that stable-value arrangements can import familiar run dynamics into new technological wrappers. If confidence in reserves or redemption wanes, users may rush to exit simultaneously. In calm periods such structures can look cash-like; in stress they may reveal themselves as fragile forms of private money.
That does not mean all stable-value instruments are unsound. It means they should be analysed less like software and more like narrow banking, money-market funds or payment liabilities. A disciplined investor should demand reserve disclosures, legal opinions where available and clarity on who bears loss if reserves fall short.
Tokenisation changes distribution more quickly than it changes economics
Tokenisation has become one of the more serious developments in digital finance because it seeks to represent existing financial claims on programmable infrastructure. In principle, this can improve transferability, reduce reconciliation costs and widen market access. Bonds, fund units and deposits can be recorded and transferred in more automated ways. Yet investors should not confuse a new wrapper with a new economic substance.
If a token represents a fund share, it is still fundamentally a fund share. If it represents a bond, the underlying credit risk remains that of the issuer. Tokenisation may improve operational efficiency, but it does not abolish duration risk, credit risk or liquidity risk. Indeed, in some circumstances it may add complexity if legal title, beneficial ownership and on-chain records are not perfectly aligned.
Where tokenisation can matter is market design. Programmable settlement may reduce some frictions in collateral management and corporate actions. Atomic settlement could lessen certain forms of counterparty risk. Fractional ownership may broaden distribution for some assets. But each of these benefits depends on the surrounding legal and institutional framework. The technology can automate transfer; it cannot, by itself, resolve disputes over jurisdiction, insolvency or investor protection.
For analysts, the practical test is straightforward: identify which costs or risks are truly being reduced, and which are merely being shifted. If tokenisation lowers post-trade reconciliation costs but increases legal ambiguity, the net gain may be smaller than marketing implies. Productivity, not novelty, is the relevant benchmark.
Regulation is becoming more legible, not less contested
For years, digital asset markets thrived on the ambiguity between software innovation and financial regulation. That era is fading. Authorities are increasingly clarifying how existing rules apply, while also building bespoke regimes for certain activities. This does not produce global harmony; the regulatory map remains fragmented. But it does make it easier to distinguish between models seeking durable compliance and those relying on grey zones.
Investors should pay attention to the difference between activity-based and entity-based oversight. A token may be traded globally, yet the relevant risks arise from identifiable functions: custody, brokerage, exchange operation, issuance, lending and payment services. Each function may trigger a different legal regime depending on jurisdiction. Serious analysis therefore requires tracing where legal obligations actually sit.
It is also unwise to assume that decentralisation automatically exempts an arrangement from scrutiny. Authorities have repeatedly signalled that economic substance and control matter more than rhetorical claims. If a small group can alter a protocol, direct treasury assets, set key parameters or profit from intermediation, regulators may conclude that familiar obligations still apply. This is particularly relevant where retail users are involved, promotional claims are strong or reserves are centrally managed.

Liquidity can vanish faster than spreadsheets suggest
Many digital assets appear liquid in ordinary conditions because trading is continuous and price feeds are ubiquitous. Yet visible trading volume can be a poor guide to executable liquidity in stress. Order books may be shallow, liquidity providers may retreat quickly and collateral calls can force simultaneous selling across venues. Assets that trade around the clock can still gap violently when confidence disappears.
The challenge is compounded by market structure. Fragmented venues, varying standards of disclosure and differing settlement arrangements can make consolidated analysis difficult. Apparent arbitrage links may break down when transfers are delayed, fees spike or counterparties become suspect. For smaller tokens, listed markets may exist without there being meaningful depth for large trades.
Investors should therefore think in terms of liquidation pathways rather than headline volume. How many venues support the asset? How concentrated is market-making? Could the position be unwound without moving the market materially? Is liquidity dependent on the continued functioning of a stable-value instrument or a single bridge between networks? Can collateral posted against the asset be realised promptly in stress?
Stress testing is especially important. A portfolio that seems diversified by token count may in fact be highly correlated through common dependence on speculative sentiment, leverage availability or a narrow set of trading intermediaries. In digital markets, correlation often rises precisely when investors most wish it would not.
Governance tells you who truly holds power
One of the recurring claims in digital finance is that networks are governed by their communities. Sometimes there is substance to this; often the reality is more concentrated. Tokens may formally confer voting rights, but participation can be thin, insider holdings large and technical expertise concentrated among a small number of developers or validators. The formal governance mechanism may therefore say less about power than the actual distribution of influence.
Investors should inspect governance with the same scepticism used in corporate analysis. Who owns the treasury? How are protocol changes proposed and implemented? Can a small coalition block or force upgrades? Are incentives aligned between early insiders and later buyers? If a crisis occurs, who has authority to pause systems, deploy reserves or alter terms? These questions are not abstract. They determine whether a system can adapt prudently under pressure, and whether minority holders have meaningful protection.
Transparency is another signal. Serious projects publish documentation, code repositories, audit trails and governance records that allow outsiders to reconstruct how decisions are made. Where key details are dispersed, inconsistent or intentionally obscure, investors should assume that governance risk is higher than advertised. In finance, opacity is seldom accidental.
Portfolio construction matters more than prediction
Because digital assets are volatile and difficult to value, investors often overemphasise directional calls and underemphasise portfolio design. Yet for most allocators the more durable edge lies in sizing, liquidity planning and governance rather than in forecasting short-term price moves. The relevant question is not merely whether an asset may rise, but whether the portfolio can survive if the thesis proves wrong.
This argues for a conservative framework. Position sizes should reflect not just expected upside but uncertainty around custody, legal treatment and market liquidity. Leverage deserves particular caution. In an asset class where collateral values can fall sharply and continuously traded markets can trigger automated liquidations, borrowing against volatile positions can turn ordinary error into permanent loss.
Scenario analysis is more useful than precise target pricing. What happens if a major intermediary fails, if a regulator restricts a key activity, if transaction costs jump during congestion or if a reserve-backed instrument briefly loses its peg? The point is not to predict the exact catalyst, but to understand transmission channels. Investors who map operational and legal dependencies in advance are better placed than those who rely on broad faith in the sector’s long-term growth.
For many portfolios, digital assets may merit treatment as a high-volatility satellite exposure rather than a core holding. That judgement will vary by mandate, but the principle is general: allocation should follow risk capacity, not cultural pressure to appear innovative.
A workable checklist for serious investors

This checklist will not eliminate risk. No framework can. But it helps investors focus on the realities that tend to decide outcomes: enforceable claims, operational resilience, balance-sheet quality and the incentives of those in control. The digital asset sector will continue to evolve, and some parts of it may reshape financial infrastructure in meaningful ways. Even so, the discipline required to navigate it remains strikingly traditional. Ask what is owned, who owes what to whom, where the assets sit, how value is realised and what happens in a crisis. In a market built on novel rails, old questions still do most of the analytical work.
